Excite Inc.'s new search engine will have the capability to access 50 million WWW pages and boast a technological advance allowing for more exact searches, company officials said today.
The next release of Excite Search, set for the begining of next week, will include their Intelligent Concept Extraction algorithm technology, which reportedly finds and scores documents based on broad concepts and keywords.
The new release will provide faster searches using less computational power, officials said. It will also offer browsing tools, including query by example, sort by site and automatic subject grouping to help eliminate unneeded documents from search results, they said.
"Excite Search will displace [Digital Equipment Corp.'s] Alta Vista as the search service of choice among power users," said Excite Chief Technology Officer Graham Spencer. In tests, the new release returned greater numbers of documents, with greater relevancy, than searches done with competing search engines, Spencer said.
