Hewlett-Packard Co said it had introduced a new family of professional-quality, network-capable color inkjet printers which are expected to be the first of their kind to sell under $800.
The HP DeskJet 870C Professional Series printers provide fast printing in quality black and color ink, along with the largest professional font collection available in a personal color printer.
They are aimed at enabling individuals and small work groups to take advantage of printer sharing.
The new printer are available for both personal computer and Apple Computer Inc's Macintosh computers, and are expected to sell for a street price of around $499.
They replace the DeskJet 850C and 855C printers, which debuted in 1995 and became one of HP's best-selling professional color inkjet printers.
"This really is HP's ultimate personal color printer, with the flexibility to connect the way it's needed," said Lisa D'Amore, product manager at HP's North American Hardcopy Marketing Center in Vancouver, Wash.
The new printers deliver sharp black texts at 600 by 600 dots per inch and prints in color at 600 by 300 dots per inch with H-P's Color Resolution Enhancement technology.
The printers -- the initial family is comprised of two models -- deliver black text at rates of up to eight pages a minute, and color at up to four pages a minute.
